42 Teams will be selected to compete at Rice University's Rice Business Plan Competition on April 15-17, 2010. Teams will compete for more than $800,000 in cash and prizes including a Grand Prize worth approximately $325,000. Every team accepted into the Rice competition is guaranteed to win at least one cash prize. The competition will be judged by more than 200 venture capital investors, angel investors, and other members of the entrepreneurial community. Competitors receive incomparable feedback, networking opportunities and mentoring. Between 2001-2008, 85 teams who have competed have gone on to launch their ventures and have raised more than $150 million in funding. More than 80% of 2009 competing teams have successfully launched their companies.

More than $800,000 was awarded in 2009
The 2009 Rice Business Plan Competition awarded more than $800,000 in cash and prizes to 42 of the top MBA/graduate schools from around the world. Dynamics of Carnegie Mellon University won the Grand Prize and also won the Best I.T. Award sponsored by Gimmal Group. Dynamics produces next-generation interactive payment cards that utilize programmable magnetic stripes to communicate dynamic information to the 60 million 1970s era magnetic stripe readers that are used in our day to day payment card transactions. This year the competition included a special Social Venture competition culminating in the $10,000 Sheafor-Lindsay Social Venture Award, which went to SolarCycle of Brown University. SolarCycle developed an innovative reflective material from recycling waste material that will be used to make solar cookers and water pasteurization systems for developing countries.
